Consultation regarding change of school name

The Governors of St Andrew’s (Barnsbury) CE Primary School are consulting with all stakeholders regarding the following -

St Andrew’s (Barnsbury) CE Primary School is seeking to remove the word “Barnsbury” from its name in order to better reflect the identity and location of the school. Although “Barnsbury” has historically been associated with the school, it no longer accurately represents where the school is situated or the wide community which it serves. Its continued use has also caused confusion within the wider community.

This change is further supported by the decision of our linked parish church to clarify its name.  From times past it has either been referred to as St Andrew's, Thornhill Square or St Andrew's Barnsbury.  It is now being styled as St Andrew's, Thornhill Square in church communications.   This choice has been made because the parish serves a geographical area that is much wider than Barnsbury.  The church’s decision reflects the shared desire to strengthen our connection to the local area and present a clearer, more unified identity that aligns with our true location.

Removing “Barnsbury” from the school name will allow us to mirror this positive step, ensuring consistency between the school and church community while reinforcing the values we uphold. This change supports our commitment to providing an inclusive, positive, and community-focused learning environment in which all pupils and families feel accurately represented and proud to belong.

Following the change, our school will be known as St Andrew's CE Primary School.

The school logo will need to change to reflect the new name and this new logo will appear on all new uniform going forward.  However, the current uniform remains in place as 'legacy uniform' with the current logo. No family will be expected to replace the uniform until the need arises to buy new. 

The four week consultation begins on 6^th January 2026 and ends on 3rd February 2026.  Please email the school admin@standrews.islington.sch.uk with any feedback to the proposed changes.

If we proceed with the removal of ‘Barnsbury’ following the consultation, the new name will come into effect on Monday 13th April 2026 (the first day of the Summer Term).
